It's been an exciting month for Azendi, as we opened our newest store in the busy North Yorkshire market town of Northallerton.
Our new store is situated on the busy high street of the historic market town of Northallerton in North Yorkshire.
There has been a settlement at Northallerton since Roman times and the area has a rich and varied history. Northallerton became an important religious centre in the 11th Century under the Bishops of Durham. The bishops built a palace in Northallerton, on the main road from York to Durham, which became a regular stopping place for royalty and other dignitaries. In the 12th Century, Northallerton was a focus for conflict between the English and the Scots, most notably the Battle of the Standard, fought nearby in 1138.
Lying in the centre of a large rural area, the town was established as a market town in 1200 by Royal Charter, and there is still a market in the town today, with Wednesdays and Saturdays seeing the High Street swell with vibrant and busy market stalls. The market joins the wide variety of shops and cafes on the High Street. There are national retailers such as Costa, Trespass, Waterstones and Fat Face alongside local independents such as the famous Betty's tearooms, Lewis & Cooper, and the independent Barker's department store.
Northallerton is easy to get to by train on the East Coast mainline, or by car on the A19 or A1M. Parking is plentiful and inexpensive with half an hour of free parking available on the High Street directly outside the front door of the store.
It is important to us that our new store feels inviting and friendly, as well as creating a display space that is easy to browse. Following the same interior design and colour palette of our Leeds and Beverley stores, the shop layout was designed and fitted to our specifications by specialist jewellery cabinet-makers, IWM Designs. We chose honey-toned oak for the cabinets to create warmth in store. The golden tones of the wood sit beautifully with the blue colour scheme (gorgeous paints from Farrow & Ball). One of the most important aspects of a jewellery store is the lighting so we have made sure that each cabinet is well-lit with bright, daylight LED lights, allowing the finest detail on the jewellery to be clearly seen.
Finally, once the building and decorating was complete, the team had a couple of very early starts and got to work in setting out the displays and placing all the jewellery into the cabinets. It was a very long day of visual merchandising but everyone's spirits were high, working in such a beautiful store. We have to say a big thank you to our fantastic new neighbours, 1Twenty7 Café, and the award-winning Thompson's Butchers, who kept the team fuelled up with coffee and snacks throughout the day!
Eventually, we were happy that everything was ready, the displays were finished and the team were prepared. The new store opened its doors on Thursday 21st July and we have had such a positive reaction from customers old and new.
We'd love to see you at the new Northallerton store - come and tell us what you think of our new home! Vikki, Paula and the team can't wait to welcome you in store to enjoy the surroundings and browse the beautifully designed jewellery. You can find us at 123 High Street, Northallerton. We are next door to Trespass and opposite Kitson's. We look forward to seeing you soon.
