    Precious Metals

Sterling silver is a precious metal and should be treated with appropriate care.

All sterling silver can tarnish over time but there are a few simple rules to ensure your Azendi silver jewellery is always looking its best:

Avoid exposing your jewellery to direct sunlight, chlorinated water, cosmetic products or household cleaning products, as these can damage the silver.

We always recommend putting on perfumes and creams and allowing them to dry before then putting on your jewellery.

To maintain the shine of your silver jewellery we recommend occasional cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish build-up. Please do not use chemical silver polish or silver dip on your jewellery as these harsh products simply strip off the top layer of silver and damage your jewellery.

To minimise scratches and tarnishing when you are not wearing your jewellery, store your silver jewellery in a cloth pouch or jewellery box.

Every single piece of our jewellery complies with the Hallmarking Act, and as such all sterling silver items weighing over 7.73g are sent for independent testing and marking at Edinburgh Assay Office. The hallmark is a mark of quality and assurance.

9 carat gold will not tarnish. Having said this, it is a relatively soft precious metal so as with other jewellery, care should be taken when wearing and storing your pieces.

Store your gold jewellery in a jewellery box or cloth pouch, avoiding any scratching against other pieces.

Gold jewellery may be cleaned with a soft microfibre cloth to maintain its shine.

Every single piece of our jewellery complies with the Hallmarking Act, and as such all gold items weighing over 1g are sent for independent testing and marking at Edinburgh Assay Office. The hallmark is a mark of quality and assurance.

18ct gold vermeil is sterling silver that has been plated with a layer of 18ct gold. Gold vermeil jewellery is hallmarked as sterling silver.

As with sterling silver, avoid letting your vermeil jewellery come into contact with chlorinated water, cosmetic products or household cleaning products.

To clean your vermeil jewellery, gently polish it with a soft microfibre cloth. This removes any excess perfumes and skin oils.

When not wearing it, store your jewellery in a box or cloth pouch.

Depending on the item and the regularity of wear, gold vermeil can fade over time. On necklaces and earrings, gold vermeil will last for many years; on a ring that is worn regularly we would expect the gold plating to wear more quickly.

Re-plating is possible for a small charge; please contact Customer Service on 0208 912 5510 for details.

Every single piece of our jewellery complies with the Hallmarking Act, and as such all gold vermeil items weighing over 7.73g are sent for independent testing and marking at Edinburgh Assay Office. The hallmark is a mark of quality and assurance.

    Hallmarking

When it comes to quality assurance at Azendi, you don’t have to take our word for it. Azendi is registered with the Edinburgh Assay Office, where our jewellery is professionally assayed and hallmarked to confirm its purity and provenance.

An official hallmark is a stamp of quality. The hallmark is a form of consumer protection, so that you can trust that an item sold as gold or silver, really is made from that precious metal.

The Hallmarking Act of 1973 dictates that independent Assay Offices must test items made from precious metals, and only if passed, apply relevant hallmarks.

There are four Assay Offices in the UK, based in London, Sheffield, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

Once created, all precious jewellery must be sent to an Assay Office.

A tiny sample of every single piece of jewellery is tested using x-ray technology and laser analysis.

After testing, if the jewellery meets the legal standard of purity requirements, each piece is stamped with a hallmark.

Laser marking is now commonly used to apply a hallmark, although many objects are still stamped by hand.

Hallmarks answer three important questions; who, what and where? A hallmark stamp consists of at least three compulsory marks which tell you the answers to these questions.

The Sponsor’s Mark shows who has sent the jewellery for hallmarking and consists of initials within a shape. In the case of Azendi, our sponsor’s mark are the initials ‘A' and 'Z’ within squares.

The Fineness Mark shows the precious metal and the level of purity. All sterling silver jewellery would have a ‘925’ hallmark applied. 9ct gold jewellery will have a ‘375’ mark applied.

The Office Mark shows where the jewellery was tested. The symbol for London is a leopard head, for Birmingham an anchor, for Sheffield a rose, and for Edinburgh, a castle. All Azendi jewellery is hallmarked at Edinburgh Assay Office.
