Written in the Stars - the New Zodiac Collection from Azendi

The zodiac is an ancient astrological system used to describe the positions and movements of celestial bodies in relation to the Earth. In Western astrology, the Zodiac consists of 12 constellations that appear to cross the path of the Sun over the course of the year. Traditionally, the constellation that was crossing the sun at the time of your birth is said to be your 'star sign' and many believe this star sign confers special characteristics and attributes to those born under the sign.

The History of the Western Zodiac

Today's Western astrological system is based on the traditions of ancient Greek and Babylonian civilizations.

The ancient Babylonians are belived to be the first civilisation to design a system of astrology. They used the constellations of the night skies to try to predict the future and interpret the will of their gods. They divided the sky into twelve sections, each corresponding to specific zodiac signs, with each having specific attributes.

By the 4th century BC, Babylonian astronomy influenced the culture of ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks developed the system, associating the twelve zodiac signs with specific deities. In fact, the term "zodiac" comes from the Greek "zōidiakos kyklos", meaning "circle of animals". The constellations are traditionally represented by animals or mythological creatures.

The Greeks believed that, at the time of someone's birth, the positions of the planets and the sun had a profound influence on their personality and fate. Each star sign developed its own associations and its own characteristics. The Greeks created birth charts and horoscopes to predict the future and explain personalities, preferences, and romantic compatibility. Nowadays, we use star signs in much the same way.
