  • What is Hamsa Hand Jewellery?

History of the Fatima or Hamsa Hand

In this day and age we are surrounded by symbols with meanings that go back thousands of years. A lot of them we may already know and others we may recognise, but not know the meaning of. This can most definitely be said for the Hamsa hand symbol. It has started to creep into a lot of modern fashion and jewellery design, but what does it stand for? The Hamsa Hand or Hand of Fatima, as it is sometimes referred to, is an open right hand that has been a symbol of protection against the evil eye for many societies throughout history. It is a symbol that predates Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The evil eye is thought to represent the fear of destructive energies that come about through negative emotions such as jealousy and hatred. Many early cultures adopted the eye as an icon for protection and others used the Hamsa which is why the most popular universal symbol became an eye placed in the palm of the hand. The power of the eye incorporated into the Hamsa was thought to create a more powerful antidote to negative forces. In some cultures the Hamsa hand faces up and in others it faces down. The five fingers represent the five sacred principals of that culture. It is meant to represent the divine and each community fills the hand with the most important icons or sacred beliefs of that culture.

    Hamsa Hand Jewellery

Nowadays the Hamsa symbol is commonly featured in jewellery and, when worn, is said to bring the wearer good health, luck and an abundance of good fortune. The Hamsa is a great talisman for people who are at a crossroads in life and, irrespective of their religious beliefs, can use it as protection against negative influences that are otherwise out of their control. Desire for protection against negativity is a universal impulse and the Hamsa is a providential charm that makes an unusual gift.
