Agate is a beautiful stone from the Chalcedony family of minerals that forms in concentric layers. It is available in a wide variety of colours and textures. It is formed from layers of silica that fill holes in a host rock, creating nodules of different coloured stone. Most Agate is ugly in its natural state and needs to be treated and polished to bring out its true beauty. In ancient times, Agate was used as a talisman to ward off fevers and quench thirst. It was also used by Persian magicians to ward off storms. During the Renaissance Agate was popularly used to make bowls which were collected by royalty. They can still be seen in many museums across Europe, including the Louvre. Agate is the birth stone for September and can represent both the 12th and 14th wedding anniversaries.
